NCDHHS Partners with Latin American Sports Figures to Increase Awareness of Wearing a Mask to Slow the Spread of COVID-19

Four popular Latin American sports figures are sharing videos about the importance of mask wearing with North Carolinians on social media:

  • Fernando Fiore, Emmy award-winning broadcaster
  • Rodolfo Landeros, Fox Deportes sportscaster
  • Claudio (El Emperador) Suárez, Former Major League Soccer player for the Mexican National Team
  • Mariano Trujillo, Former Major League Soccer player for the Mexican National Team and current Fox Deportes analyst

The influencer partnership with Fiore, Landeros, Suárez and Trujillo is part of the "Whatever Your Reason" campaign from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services designed to encourage North Carolinians to get behind the mask.

In the videos, the sports influencers ask North Carolinians to wear a mask and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Landeros adds, "Protect your loved ones, your family, your friends and everyone in your community by wearing a mask."

"Our Latinx/Hispanic community has been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. Partnering with influential voices to spread the message of mask wearing is more important than ever," said NCDHHS Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D.

In September, NCDHHS launched "Cualquiera que sea tu razón" to run in parallel with the "Whatever Your Reason" English-language campaign encouraging North Carolinians to "Get Behind the Mask" to slow the spread of COVID-19. The public campaign includes a series of print advertisements in community-based print and online publications; television and radio public service announcements; social media and online display advertisements; and displays at gas stations, convenience stores, bus stations and on buses.
