State Releases Guidance for Restaurants

Perhaps one of the most appealing aspects of the anticipated Phase 2 changes is the ability to eat at our local restaurants again.  Of course, this still requires all of us to do our part in keep protective measures in place; doing so will move our community further down the road toward Phase 3.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has provided important guidance for restaurants during Phase 2.  For the full list of requirements and recommendations, restaurant operators should use the Interim Guidance for Restaurants (PDF).

Among others, restaurants are required to:

  • Ensure social distancing by arranging tables and seating to achieve at least 6 feet separation between parties for indoor and outdoor dining.
    • Each group of people sitting at a counter should be separated by six feet.
  • Permit no more than 50% of maximum occupancy as stated in fire capacity. Restaurants may permit up to 12 people per 1,000 feet if there is not a fire code number available.
  • Conduct daily symptom screening of employees at entrance and immediately sending symptomatic workers home to isolate.
  • Perform ongoing and routine environmental cleaning and disinfection of high-touch areas (e.g., doors, doorknobs, rails) with an EPA-approved disinfectant for SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19).

Farmers and Meat Processing

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has posted guidance online for farmworkers and workers at meat plants. These toolkit materials can be shared and are available to print and distribute to workers of farms and meat and poultry processing plants.
