Second Booster Recommended for Those 50+ and/or Immunocompromised

Most recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized a second booster dose of either the Pfizer or the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for people 50 and older and individuals that are immunocompromised. By offering a second booster dose, now individuals at a higher risk for severe disease, hospitalization and death will be protected even more against severe COVID-19.

The new second booster guidelines are as follows: 

• A second booster dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine may be given to individuals 50 years of age and older that received their first booster at least 4 months ago*.
• A second booster dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered to individuals 12 years of age and older with certain kinds of immunocompromise at least 4 months after receipt of a first booster dose*. This applies to individuals who have undergone solid organ transplantation, or who are living with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise.
• A second booster dose of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered at least 4 months after the first booster dose* to individuals 18 years of age and older with the same certain kinds of immunocompromise.

* Adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of Johnson & Johnson's Janssen (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine at least four months ago may now receive a second booster dose of either Pfizer or Moderna, based on one’s age and/or health condition.

It is important to note that current evidence suggests that some waning of protection can occur over time against serious outcomes from COVID-19 in older and immunocompromised individuals. Additionally, data also shows that an initial booster dose is critical in helping to protect all adults from the potentially severe outcomes of COVID-19. So, those who have not received their initial booster dose are strongly encouraged to do so, as well.
