Does Your Child Need to Be Tested for or Vaccinated Against COVID?

Youth camps can play an important role in the lives of children, including supporting their social, emotional, and physical development. Camps can also provide opportunities for children to try new activities, develop new friendships, develop new social and emotional skills, and be physically active. In addition to allowing for free play and unstructured learning, many camps also incorporate educational content.

With summer now getting somewhat back to normal and summer camps finally being offered, your child may be required to get a COVID-19 test before attending their first day of camp. If this is the case, please feel free to visit our website where you can find a list of different agencies within Rowan County that are offering this service. We highly recommend that you contact the listed agencies to find out if an appointment is necessary and if there is any cost associated with having a test.

Although research has shown that fewer children have become sick with COVID-19 compared to adults, children can still become infected, get sick, and/or spread COVID-19.  It is especially important to realize that children can easily have no symptoms, even though they may be COVID positive. It is also important to know that children with certain underlying medical conditions are at an increased risk of having more severe symptoms with COVID-19.  By now knowing this, it is now more important than ever to get our children vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as we can.

If your child still needs to receive their COVID vaccine, especially before going to summer camp or heading back to school in August, please visit the CDC’s vaccine finder. Here, you will find a number of local agencies/businesses that are offering COVID vaccines in Rowan County, such as:

  1. Novant Health at the J. F. Hurley YMCA; Walk-ins are accepted W-F 8 am – 5 pm
  2. Larger chain pharmacies: CVS and Walgreens
  3. Grocery Stores: Walmart, Food Lion (Salisbury and China Grove), Sam’s Club
  4. Local pharmacies: Moose Pharmacy, The Medicine Shoppe, and Cannon Pharmacy
  5. Provider offices: Rowan County Public Health, Rowan Diagnostic Clinic, Pro Med, and Salisbury Pediatric (only for established patients)

To find out more information about which vaccines are being offered and when they are being offered, please contact the agency/business directly.  It is important to know that when seeking out a COVID vaccine for your child, any child below the age of 12 is not currently eligible to receive a vaccine. However, if your child is 12 years old and older, they can receive the following vaccines based on their age:

  • Pfizer Vaccine (age 12+)
  • Moderna Vaccine (age 18+)
  • Johnson and Johnson (age 18+)

If you should have any further questions and/or concerns about your child being tested or getting their COVID vaccination, please feel free to contact our COVID Hotline at 980-432-1800.

Here’s wishing you and your family a safe, healthy, and wonderful rest of the summer!
