CDC Announces New Guidance for Fully Vaccinated Individuals

The CDC recently issued its first set of recommendations on activities that people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can safely resume. This guidance will be updated and expanded based on the level of community spread of COVID-19, the proportion of the population that is fully vaccinated, and as additional scientific evidence becomes available.

This new guidance, which is based on the latest science, includes recommendations for how and when a fully vaccinated individual can visit with other people who are fully vaccinated and with other people who are not vaccinated. This guidance represents a first step toward returning to everyday activities in our communities.

At this time, people are considered fully vaccinated for COVID-19 two  weeks after they have received the second dose in a 2-dose series of Pfizer or Moderna, or two weeks after they have received a single-dose vaccine (Johnson and Johnson [J&J]/Janssen).

Please note that the following recommendations apply to non-healthcare settings.

Fully vaccinated people can:

  • Visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing
  • Visit with unvaccinated people from a single household who are at low risk for severe COVID-19 disease indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing
  • Refrain from quarantine and testing following a known exposure, if asymptomatic

For now, fully vaccinated people should continue to:

  • Take precautions in public by continuing to wear a well-fitted mask and physical distancing themselves from others outside their immediate family household
  • Wear masks, practice physical distancing, and adhere to other prevention measures when visiting with unvaccinated people who are at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease or who have an unvaccinated household member who is at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease
  • Wear masks, maintain physical distance, and practice other prevention measures when visiting with unvaccinated people from multiple households
  • Get tested if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Follow Governor Cooper’s Executive Orders. Please note that these recent recommendations do not override any directives from the governor.
  • Avoid medium-and-large-sized in-person gatherings. Please see the current capacity limits for North Carolina.
  • Follow guidance issued by individual employers. Please note that an employer’s guidelines take precedence over any new CDC guidelines or recommendations.

Follow CDC and health department travel requirements and recommendations. All nonessential trips, regardless of vaccination status, should be avoided due to known spikes in case counts after surges in travel and the emergence of variants from international locations.
